Pool and spa electrical work is regulated under CEC Section 68, which has specific requirements that go well beyond standard residential wiring: Getting pool and spa electrical wrong can create lethal shock hazards.
Pro Call Electric follows CEC Section 68 requirements — not general residential code — for every pool and spa installation.
- Dedicated circuits: hot tubs require a dedicated 240V/50A or 240V/60A circuit with a GFCI disconnect within sight of the spa.
- GFCI protection: all circuits within defined zones around pools and spas must have GFCI protection.
- Equipotential bonding: all metallic components of the pool or spa — the shell, ladders, pump, heater, and surrounding metalwork — must be connected with a bonding conductor to prevent voltage differences that can cause electric shock drowning (ESD).
- Setback requirements: receptacles, lighting fixtures, and overhead lines must maintain minimum distances from water per CEC Section 68.
From the panel to the disconnect box — complete and code-compliant.
- Hot tub and portable spa connection: dedicated 240V/50A GFCI-protected circuit with disconnect box positioned to code.
- In-ground pool electrical: pump motor circuit, underwater lighting, and GFCI protection.
- Above-ground pool electrical: pump circuit and outdoor GFCI outlets.
- Bonding systems: equipotential bonding of pool shell, pump, heater, and metalwork — the most critical safety component in pool/spa electrical.
- Exterior GFCI outlets: weatherproof GFCI outlets at code-required distances from water.
- Pool and patio lighting: outdoor lighting circuits for the pool area, patios, and pergolas.
- Sauna electrical: dedicated 240V circuit for electric sauna heaters

Most hot tub dealers will tell you to have the electrical ready before delivery day.
The standard requirement is: Lead time: Pro Call Electric typically needs 1-2 weeks to schedule and complete the permit process.
Plan your electrical ahead of delivery day.
- 240V/50A or 240V/60A dedicated circuit (check your tub’s owner manual for exact requirements).
- 4-wire connection (two hot legs, neutral, and ground).
- GFCI disconnect mounted within sight of the tub, at the setback distance required by CEC Section 68.
- Conduit run from the panel to the disconnect, then to the tub’s junction box.
