Safety orientation that travels across provincial lines.
CSTS (Construction Safety Training System) is the basic safety orientation course built to standardise the minimum knowledge every worker needs before stepping onto a Canadian construction site. Unlike regional certificates, CSTS is recognised coast to coast, which makes moving crews between Alberta and BC straightforward.
The course covers the worker’s and employer’s legal responsibilities, the right to refuse dangerous work, correct PPE use, and recognition of the most common site hazards: electricity, falls, confined spaces, and moving equipment.
A prerequisite, not a differentiator.
- Access to any industrial or commercial construction site.
- Projects requiring standardised safety orientation for subcontractors.
- Sites with multiple companies working simultaneously, where the owner needs a common safety language across crews.
The fundamentals everything else in a safety programme builds on.
- Rights and responsibilities: for the worker, the supervisor, and the employer.
- The right to refuse dangerous work: how and when to exercise it.
- Basic PPE: selection, use, and maintenance.
- Hazard recognition: electricity, falls, confined spaces, mobile equipment.
- Incident reporting: how to report a near miss and an actual incident.
No fixed legal expiry, renewed by internal policy.
CSTS has no set legal expiry date, but Pro Call Electric treats the certificate as part of every technician’s onboarding and reviews the content periodically alongside the rest of the crew’s safety tickets.
A shared standard makes integrating with a client’s crew easier.
- Fast mobilisation between Alberta and BC: the certificate is recognised in both provinces.
- Less friction on multi-contractor sites: safety language already aligned with the other crews on site.
- Part of the company’s own SECOR programme, not a standalone item.
Is CSTS the same thing as WHMIS?
No. CSTS is general site safety orientation. WHMIS is specific to handling hazardous materials and chemicals. A technician usually needs both.
Are CSTS-09 and CSTS-2020 the same?
They’re versions of the same training system, updated over time. The core safety orientation content stays consistent between them.
Do I need CSTS for a residential-only project?
Residential sites typically require lighter certification, but on almost any commercial or industrial site, CSTS is close to universal.
Need to confirm CSTS before clearing site access?
We’ll send current certificates for every technician assigned to your project.
