Fit testing is the procedure that confirms whether a specific respirator seals correctly on a specific worker’s face. There are two main methods: qualitative (detecting a leak by taste or smell of a test agent) and quantitative (numerically measuring leakage with equipment).
Face shape, facial hair, scarring, or weight change all affect the seal. That’s why the test is individual, and why it needs to be redone whenever any of those conditions change, not only at the scheduled annual renewal.

Fit testing is revalidated every 12 months. A significant weight change, new facial hair, or a new facial scar invalidates the previous test and requires a new fit test before the respirator is worn again.

What’s the difference between a qualitative and quantitative fit test?
A qualitative test detects a leak through the taste or smell of a test agent the worker notices if the seal fails. A quantitative test measures the leakage numerically with equipment, a more precise result generally required in higher-risk environments.
How often does fit testing need to be redone?
Every 12 months as routine, and sooner whenever there’s a relevant facial change: weight, facial hair, scarring.
Does one fit test cover any respirator model?
No. The test is specific to the model and size of respirator used. Switching models requires a new fit test.
